MOBILE UNIT ASSISTANT

Job Description
Responsible for transporting, setting up, and breaking down blood collection equipment. Responsible for labeling, handling, storing, and transporting of blood and blood products. Assists in all phases of bloodmobile operations and donor center operations as needed. Reports to the Team Supervisor. Takes direction from the charge person at blood collection sites. Is required to work closely with Donor Services personnel, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and other staff.

Duties and Responsibilities: Loads and unloads trucks. Transports all required equipment to and from the collection site according to Standard Operating Procedures in a safe, timely, and cost effective manner. Organizes and maintains contents of vehicles before, during, and after bloodmobile. Prepares bloodmobile site and sets up and breaks down equipment promptly and in an orderly manner. Maintains a neat, clean physical appearance of the collection site both during and after the operation. Processes blood packs, pilot tubes, and segments according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). Stores and transports blood products according to SOP’s. Uses appropriate protective measures as required.

Adheres to the SOP on biohazardous safety as well as all other assigned SOP’s and practices all protective measures specified in same. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, National Red Cross Blood Services Directives (BSD’s), American Association of Blood Bank (AABB) standards, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements, and New England policies and procedures. Ensures that vehicle is operated and parked in accordance with safety requirements and traffic ordinances and that vehicle and/or equipment malfunctions or breakdowns are promptly reported. If operating a CMV follows all Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. May be required to perform shuttle driver functions as needed. Assists with donor reactions. Monitors donors in the canteen area as directed by the charge person. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Requires job knowledge equivalent to that gained in four (4) years of High School. Requires one (1) to three (3) months of related experience. Requires the ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of people. Requires the physical ability to lift and carry needed supplies and equipment. Requires the ability to safely lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Requires the appropriate valid driver’s license and DOT certification if required. This position is in OSHA Category I in view of the fact that it requires the incumbent to work under conditions where the potential exists for the incumbent to make contact with blood or blood components and/or human body fluids or tissue samples as a result of splashes, spills, and/or needlesticks.
